The job of a sales leader is to help your people achieve more than they would have achieved if you just left them alone. Do your sales reps really believe that’s your goal?
It’s your responsibility to make sure everybody is in line with what they need to be doing. Yet most managers forget the affirming side of leadership is to also make sure you’re giving positive feedback reminding them you’re on their side.
Early in my career, I was assigned to a different sales manager. We went out to lunch on the first day where he shared how he was paid a salary plus a commission, based on a percentage of his total team’s sales. “If you don’t make your numbers missing your bonus, I probably won’t make my numbers and will miss out on my bonus. So will you let me help you?”
From that point on, I trusted him, knowing he was on my side and wanted to help me achieve as much as I could so I could make as much money as possible for both of us.
What are you doing to make sure your team understands you are affirming and supporting their efforts?
